Web Sites That Visit You

Daniel Burrus

Industry experts are predicting that, within the next year, a technology known as RSS will revolutionize the way people use the Web. Although the technology is five years old, a plethora of spam, pop-ups, and unsolicited video advertising is making user-controlled Web feeds more popular than ever.

Basically, RSS feeds allow users to select what content they wish to view from RSS-enabled Web sites. A software application (called an aggregator) installed on the computer retrieves updated information automatically at pre-set intervals. The feeds can be organized, formatted and prioritized by the user and (for now at least) they are totally spam free.

Some search engines are already including Web feeds in their results and operating systems are expected to include aggregator tools as a part of their next generation products.
