An Owner or a Victim

By: Jim Blasingame

How we behave when something unfortunate happens says a lot more about us than it does about the thing that has just imposed itself on our lives.

In his book, , my friend, Steve Chandler, suggests we have two choices at that moment: we can either choose to become the owner of what has happened, or its victim.

A victim feels the need to deny responsibility for the circumstances and thus surrender control. An owner accepts responsibility as a way of gaining control in order to positively alter what comes next. A victim fears being blamed for failure. An owner fears not having the ability to create success.

As an Army officer, I was taught that I was responsible for everything my unit did or failed to do. If it happens on your watch, it belongs to you. Ownership.

In small business, if you don't take ownership of ALL of the challenges you will face, you will not be a business owner for very long.

I know owners and I know victims. Owners have more fun.

Thanks for being part of our community. I'll see you on the radio and the Internet.
