Getting Started
Some resources for budding home-based entrepreneurs .

By Beverley Williams, The Home Business Advocate

Thousands of people contact me for information on how to get started in a home-based business. Here’s what I recommend:

First, go to your local library and bookstore. The shelves are full of books about home-based businesses in general and specific information on types of businesses that are appropriate to start from home. Look especially for a book by Paul and Sarah Edwards titled Best Home Businesses for the 21st Century. This and other books on running a home-based business are also available to order from the web at www.amazon.com.

Second, check with your local community college, Office of Economic Development, or Small Business Development Center (SBDC, a program of the Small Business Administration linked with local community resources) for classes, seminars, workshops and other information about starting a small business. Find the closest to you at www.sba.gov/sbdc.

Third, once you’ve started your home-based business, join us here at the Small Business Advocate where you can read and hear advice from the many experts on small and home-based business issues.

I hope this information helps you take the next step in joining the more than 24 million people running a home-based business in the US today.
