Smugwump™: The Rest Of The Story.

Jim Blasingame coined the word Smugwump from the ancient Algonquin Indian word, "mugwump," which means "great chief."

To the Algonquians, a mugwump was an individual who had power. In the American English usage it also came to mean someone with political power, typically when an individual or a group acts independently to influence a political outcome.

In its most famous political application, mugwump was the moniker given to a group of Republicans who deserted their party's 1884 presidential nominee, James G. Blaine, to vote for the Democrat, Grover Cleveland. As history shows, Cleveland won.

By taking the root word and prefixing the "S" on it, Smugwump serves three purposes:

1. Smugwumps demonstrate political power through their devotion to small business issues and independence voting behavior.

2. The first syllable is part of the Smugwump Creed.

3. And of course, the first two letters are alliterative of who we are, small business.
